The Triple Bottom Line
Dr. Gordon Sparks / Mr. Graham Parsons |
|
Increasing energy prices, climate change with the impending regulation and taxation of carbon emissions, and looming limitations of natural resources generally, all increase the need to make overall sustainability a critical element of project evaluation and overall organizational strategy. This presentation provides an overview of the concepts and principles of evaluating current operations as well as new projects relative to The Triple Bottom Line namely, the lifecycle economics of profitability, the environmental footprints, and the overall social implications. Global warming is a reality that is introducing new approaches towards the management of information, the design and engineering standards for projects and the evaluation requirements for projects and technologies to meet emerging sustainability requirements. The presentation also includes an illustrative example of the application of The Triple Bottom Line method of evaluation to the design of a proposed public building. |

Respect the Process
Ms. Marion Wright |
|
Communication. Are you listening so hard you cannot hear?
I have never been a fan of contests for sales people. I believe that a talented salesperson can easily manipulate a sale in favour of the contest rather than in favour of the client. And it doesnt take a contest for this to happen. Everyone at any given time is either selling or being sold and in both situations we can miss the mark when we try too hard to listen. In this workshop from Respect The Process we will look at techniques that will help us to truly hear what the other person is saying which will allow us to build better relationships. |

| Session 4A |
DDC Building Controls
Mr. John Cain |
|
Building Controls have come a long way since Warren Johnson received his first U.S. patent for the first electric room thermostat over 125 years ago. Little did he know how his invention would launch a multi-billion dollar industry and would be the beginning of building control and efficiency.
Todays DDC Building Automation Systems are connected and leveraged in buildings in ways Warren Johnson could have never imagined. Not just HVAC or Lighting control, but Energy Management, LEED M&V, Sustainability and Carbon Footprint tracking are all elements in todays modern BAS in commercial, industrial and institutional facilities.
As the networks of the facility become more sophisticated and taxed with increasing demands placed on them, the use of building control and automation systems that take advantage of the digital enterprise to maximize facility, energy management and control, become increasingly important.

Fire Protection of Steel Structures
Dr. George Frater |
|
This presentation overviews how steel construction is used with respect to the fire safety requirements of Building Codes. Slides will illustrate fire safe designs where the steel structure is expressed in the architectural design (utilizing intumescent coatings, fire resistant steel, sprinklers, concrete-filling, etc.) or where the steel structure is covered (with fire resistive sprayed materials, rigid boards, concrete-encasement, etc.). The performance-based or objective-based codes are providing an opportunity for fire protection engineers to apply engineered solutions and use advanced calculation techniques such as computer fire modeling. Slides will illustrate performance-based designs for steel assemblies/elements in buildings by citing case examples where fire protection engineering was applied.
Topics will include the following:
- ULC S101 Standard, Fire Test and Fire Resistance Ratings
- Steel Material Properties vs. Temperature
- Fire Protection Methods Used for Steel Structures
- Cardington (UK) Research Project fire tests on an eight storey steel building
- Innovative Performance-Based Fire Safe Designs of Steel Structures

| Session 4C |
Canadian Construction Overview
Mr. Alex Carrick |
|
Presentation of an overview forecast of Canadian construction markets. This will include 2010 and 2011 projections of housing starts and investment put-in-place figures for engineering work and the other major categories of construction. |
| Session 5A |
The Art of Commissioning
Mr. Murray Guy |
|
Project commissioning involves the processes, checks and balances to be used to achieve a fully functional facility that will perform as intended and meet owner requirements for sustainability, quality, time and budget.
As commissioning agent for the Manitoba Hydro Downtown Office project, Integrated Designs Inc. of Saskatoon is providing services for meeting the requirements of the LEED fundamental and best practice commissioning. Murray Guy will share his firms experiences and observations on sustainable building and commissioning within the context of a LEED project as the way to enlightenment. Dont miss this meditation of the benefits of building commissioning! |
| Session 5B |
The Future of Roofing
Dr. Ralph Paroli |
|
Roofing is a key component of any building and the roofing system plays a significant role in achieving sustainable construction. While many believe sustainable roofs, green roofs, white roofs or reflective roofs are new these have been around for more than 30 years. Good roofing practices have always been promoted by roofing associations and industry. Roof systems can be designed in such a way that there is an emphasis throughout their entire lifecycle on the efficient use of natural resources and protection of the environment. This presentation will discuss issues regarding the present and future of roofing as it applies to sustainable roofs (including green roofs and white/reflective roofs) and give an overview of the current work of the CIB W83 Commission on Roofing. |
| Session 5C |
PDF Paperless Workflow
Ms. Stephani Haynes |
|
Architectural, engineering and construction firms are migrating to paperless workflows to reduce paper usage and associated costs, improve productivity and implement sustainable business practices. How can your firm transition to and maintain a paperless workflow? This session will show how the powerful PDF format can be used to implement digital workflows from design to closeout. And we will explore complementary technologies that can help make your life easier.
The Power of PDF

Advanced AV Technology Impact of Facility Design
Mr. Marcel Schoenberger |
|
With AV technology, such as high definition videoconferencing, digital video signal distribution over fiber, etc, becoming viable technologies, AV-technology is rapidly becoming a key component of the functional programs from corporate use, to post secondary education and particularly to the health care field. Distance education especially is playing an increasingly important role in the post secondary education, and the impact on facility design is significant.
This presentation will not only touch on the latest advanced AV technologies, but will focus on the rather significant impact on all disciplines involved, from architectural, room acoustics, noise control, electrical, lighting, millwork, HVAC to network design. It is important to get all these room criteria right at the initial design stage for the successful design of spaces designated to being used for videoconferencing based distance education purposes, as changes to existing facilities/building systems can be very expensive, if not impossible.
Additionally this presentation will provide an overview of the responsibilities and the dependencies between design disciplines for the AV systems related infrastructure and facility design requirements. |

The Canadian Light Source
A Bright Light Shining in a Cold Landscape
Dr. Jeffrey Cutler |
|
As applied research moves into the 21st century, scientists are discovering that traditional analytical techniques are not answering all of their questions. For example, new materials are being developed daily that may have significantly different properties but are chemical indistinguishable using current analysis techniques. It is important for researchers to understand these differences and be able to go back to the laboratory and impart those unique properties to new products or processes. Therefore, today, scientists are turning to new tools to shed light on old and new questions. One such tool is synchrotron light-based analysis which is now being seen as the enabling technology that will help answer many of these difficult questions.
Twenty-two beamlines (with very heavy involvement from the Canadian scientific communities) are now in various stages of operation, commissioning, construction and planning. These beamlines and associated facilities will be extremely useful for research ranging from materials and environmental science to life sciences. This presentation will report on the current status of the Canadian Light Source and some insight into the future of the facility. |

Schmoozing
Ms. Marion Wright |
|
My greatest fear is being one on one with someone and neither of us having anything to say. Now throw into the mix a social gathering, drinks, appetizers, shaking hands, meeting new people, ahhhhhhh show me a seat in a corner quick! And dont think you can work the room by a quick exchange of business cards. Success is about relationships and schmoozing is a vehicle to help get you there. In this workshop from Respect The Process we will have fun trying to master the art of balancing your wine glass and food while establishing connections and building relationships |
